ABSTRACT. In this seminar, we propose to reflect on the hypothesis of a common way of thinking for the Mediterranean’s peoples and to consider a concept which, in our view, is a unifying one, which has been mentioned several times but never definitively adopted. A concept that seems to us to be more relevant and better adapted to the modern world because it encompasses and transcends Fernand Braudel’s concept of the Mediterranean as a paradigm of space and movement and could provide the basis for an inclusive civilisational project whose touchstone would be a common value capable of building a new humanism.
HALIMA OUANADA is a Professor of French literature and civilisation at the University of Tunis El Manar. She also holds a Master’s degree in the Science of Antiquity from the Université Marc Bloch in Strasbourg (France). She is the author of two prize-winning books, La Femme chez Voltaire (Prix Zoubeida B’Chir, 2011) and Térence, un poète comique intemporel (Prix Ottavio Lanza, 2007), as well as several articles and papers on the Eighteenth Century, the philosophers of the Enlightenment, Women in the Enlightenment, Gender, the Mediterranean and Relations between East and West. She is the founder and president of the Tunisian Association for Studies on the Enlightenment (ATEL) and a member of the International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ISECS) and the Voltaire Society. Her most recent books include: (Re)penser le féminin…, L’Harmattan, Paris, 2020; Voyages et voyageurs aux temps des Lumières, Arabesque, Tunis, 2021 and Les Sources étrangères des Lumières occidentale, Arabesque, Tunis, 2022 (in press).
